Chasing the Sun - When Solar Is Your Only Option

There’s a romantic version of solar power on the road.

Panels quietly soaking up sunlight. Batteries always topped off. Freedom, clean energy, no stress.

And then there’s the version no one really talks about.

The Morning It Doesn’t Work

I woke up to thick cloud cover. The kind that doesn’t break, doesn’t shift, doesn’t give you even a little bit to work with.

Normally, cloudy days are manageable. You don’t get a full charge, but you get enough. Enough to stay afloat until the sun comes back.

Today wasn’t that kind of day.

Yesterday didn’t bring much sun either, which meant I started the morning already behind. One of my power stations never fully charged. The bigger one, the one that runs my refrigerator, was sitting at 32%.

That’s not a comfortable number when your food depends on it.

That’s a countdown.

When One Problem Becomes Five

Here’s how quickly things stack up when you rely on solar:

• No sun → no power

• No power → no way to cook

• No cooking → no usable food

• No power → fridge at risk

• Fridge at risk → food spoilage

By morning, I was out of food I could actually eat without heating it.

Everything left required power I didn’t have.

That’s the part people don’t think about. Power isn’t just convenience out here. It’s access.

The Scramble

I had to shift fast.

I remembered the advice about finding alternative places to plug in - community centers, parks, anywhere public.

First stop: a community center.

Closed.

So I started bouncing from park to park, letting Google Maps lead the way, hoping one of them would have an outlet I could actually use.

At the same time, I reached out to a local mission just to figure out food. Because now this wasn’t just about power, it was about getting through the day.

Eventually, I found a park with an outlet.

Now I’m sitting here charging, half-expecting someone to come over and tell me I can’t.

That low-level tension? It’s part of this life too.

The Reality of Solar Dependence

Solar works - until it doesn’t.

And when it doesn’t, you feel it immediately.

There’s no buffer unless you’ve built one:

• Extra battery capacity

• Backup charging options

• A financial cushion for days like this

If you don’t have those yet, a cloudy stretch can turn into a real problem fast.

Not theoretical. Not inconvenient.

Real.

The Part I Didn’t Expect

What surprised me most isn’t the lack of sun.

It’s how much of this lifestyle depends on things that aren’t obvious at first:

• Where can you reliably plug in?

• Where can you get food when cooking isn’t an option?

• Where can you go without being questioned or moved along?

Parking is only one piece of the puzzle.

Living out here is about systems, not just spots.

And right now, those systems are scattered, inconsistent, and hard to find when you actually need them.

Where This Is Headed

Sitting here today, watching my power crawl back up inch by inch, something feels very clear:

There needs to be a better way to find the basics.

Not just places to park—but places to:

• Charge power stations

• Take a shower

• Do laundry

• Get a hot meal

• Sit without being told to leave

That’s the real infrastructure of this life.

And it shouldn’t be this hard to piece together.

Today, As It Is

Right now, the plan is simple:

• Sit here as long as I can and charge

• Stretch whatever power I get

• Take the $30 I borrowed and get food

• Reset and try again tomorrow

It’s frustrating. There’s no point pretending it isn’t.

But it’s also honest.

This is what “chasing the sun” actually looks like sometimes.

Not freedom in the abstract, but problem-solving in real time.

If you’re relying on solar, don’t just plan for sunny days.

Plan for stretches like this.

Have a backup for your backup if you can. Even something small makes a difference.

And more importantly, start paying attention to where your real resources come from.

Because it’s not just about sunlight.

It’s about access.

This life is still worth it.

But days like today make you earn it a little.
